Virginie Despentes
2006 - Indie Bound
Essentials | Sex and Politics
By sharing personal experiences, Virginie Despentes tackles themes such as prostitution, rape, patriarchy and pornography by breaking down self-righteous discourse. She delivers a personal, raw and explosive essay on subjects that are often taboo.
“I am writing as an ugly one for the ugly ones”. I don’t know a stronger way to begin a book. The first chapter is particularly uplifting, raw and liberating. I never get tired of reading it, reading it again and reading it out loud at every opportunity. The following chapters also greatly impressed me because of the mix of autobiography/essay style, as well as the rage, the vitality and the reflections of Virginie Despentes. It’s a good slap in the face – and you don’t have to be a masochist to appreciate it!
